Through a chance meeting with a friend I was introduced to Tom. It became very clear after one meeting that Tom could add value to my leadership through deeper levels of conversation and curiosity with our team. My leadership style was outdated I was a teller and instructor not a listener and certainly not inquisitive, I engaged with the team on a surface level rather than trying to understand why through deeper levels of curiosity. Initially I found our sessions quite challenging, by the end the personal growth was evident. Through my time with Tom we implemented a number of team driven changes in the business designed around efficiency and effectiveness, rather than suggesting this is “now what we are doing” the team took control and implemented the changes. I contacted and engaged Tom because I needed help with people management across all sectors of the business. We have a team of 26 staff and as GM I have looked at different ways to make positive change within the group to therefore improve the culture at Salute. Before I started working with Tom I had challenges within certain areas of the Business that needed to be fixed Since working with Tom I gained a much clearer understanding of how to grab a group and bring them together. I set a plan and called the team in to a meeting to set some basic standards that we all agree to as an ongoing theme. As a team we now hold each other to this set standard which has brought a much more consistent level of output. I found that listening to what they needed was a great tip as well, so we could then mould the plan and outcome around this to assist. The coaching sessions always challenged me and put me outside of my “comfort” zone! The journey took me through my past experiences and made me realise why I react now in the present. Until I ventured through this process I couldn’t pin point why I felt uncomfortable about certain things!
